""Modern Construction Envelopes"" is based on the two books by Andrew Watts ""Modern Construction Roofs"" and ""Modern Construction Facades"". Both volumes have been gathered into one single volume and unified in terms on content, which permits the consideration of facades and roofs as envelopes. This is of particular interest as to design and its creative freedom.Using current examples of renowned architects, Andrew Watts presents the constructive and material related details. This presentation is based on an easy-to-understand text, photos, and standardized detail drawings as well 3D represe

This interdisciplinary study interprets the façade of Wells Cathedral as an integral part of thirteenth-century English Church liturgy and politics. Carolyn Malone posits that architectural motifs, as signs, complemented not only the façade's sculptural program of the Church Triumphant but also its use during liturgical processions. Interpreted as an ideological construct, the façade's design is related to theological change, liturgical innovation and political strategy, as well as to the conjuncture of several major historical and cultural events of the 1220s. As part of the Church's empowering ritual, the façade expressed the reforming views of the Fourth Lateran Council, promoted Wells as the seat the diocese and proclaimed the covenant between Church and State in England following Magna Carta.

The Ecologies of the Building Envelope theorizes the building envelope as a literal embodiment of the social, political, technological, and economic contingencies which have become embedded within it over the last century, analyzing the historical lineages, heroes and villains that helped define the complex material ecologies we see within the envelope today. While the facade is one of the most thoroughly theorized elements of architecture, it is also one of the most questioned since the end of the 19th century. Within the discipline of architecture, the traditional understanding of the facade focuses primarily on semiotic and compositional operations (such as proportional laws and linguistic codes) which are deployed on the building's surface. Rather than producing a stylistic analysis of the facade, we investigate the historical lineages of the performances, components, assembly types, and material entanglements that constitute the contemporary building envelope.
